18JAN2000Reading pub17JAN2000 eveningTVTL meeting Went and saw Hammersmith and Harrods earlier in the day, but was totally zonked. Caught train out from Ealing-Broadway, took much longer than a Paddington service, but we got one of those 180km/h XPT-ish services back and managed to avoid any fines by showing them the 6-zone tube pass.
19JAN2000Westminster18JAN2000Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, House of Commons and House of Lords Question Time The Big Ben looks much nicer now with its touch-up of golden livery.

This parliament is a model to the world on how question times should be handled; the behaviour was exemplary (with the odd exception of some sexism, "demented meercats"). Unfortunately, Australia imported the exact same model but somehow screwed up. Either the compulsory voting or the pool of population to select from?

We got the number 9 bus the wrong way around and nearly missed BBC2 at 6:30pm!
20JAN2000Covent Garden19JAN2000Shops, shops, London Transport Museum, shops Well this was fun. As predicted, managed to blow a huge whole in the wallet at the Transport Museum shop!

Everywhere around here seems to have a shop selling spuds. Mmmmm!
21JAN2000South Kensington museum district20JAN2000V&A Museum Unfortunately, a combination of fatigue catching up on me, and Elizabeth deciding to start history in chronological order, got me too uninterested so I went home to have a nap. Never mind, she has to come back anyway to see the second half (taking twice as long as predicted!) and we got to go out to a Hungarian restaurant -- I love cheesy pancakes!
22JAN2000Reading district21JAN2000Junkers NAZI bomb site, a spooky lane with a St Mary's Church, a castle besieged for 20 months and destroyed during the Civil War, a house from Planet of the Spiders, the "real" Devil's End (from The Daemons), the Ufrington Horse circa 3000BC, and the town where everything was a robot replica from The Android Invasion. Yes yes, three of these were pilgrimages to Doctor Who sites where they shot the outdoor filming, oh, around 25 years ago. Not that they looked any different one bit! The horse is the oldest, oldest "thing" in all of England and was very nice during sunset, with sheep grazing on the plateau just behind it.
23JAN2000Notting Hill22JAN2000Portobello Road, more Portobello Road, even more Portobello Road Jeez this thing is long ... yes literally the largest collection of antiques in the world. Of course we had to go on a Saturday, so naturally Elizabeth had basically made it 100 metres down the road, less than a block, by sunset (not that that means anything). But there were some really deep galleries in the street's houses. This trip is beginning to look like a month is barely enough.
