[SLUG] Determinig current X server ?

I tried (as root) Crossfire's

cd /etc/X11
ln -s ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X

but on reboot - hoping to go into graphical login - I received

ln: 'X": File exists

further,

Eora:/etc/X11# startx

/etc/X11/X is not executable, giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to Xserver
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Trying

Eora:/etc/X11# ls -ltr /etc/X11/X

gave me

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Jun 15 23:52 /etc/X11/X -> ../../X11R6/bin/XFree86

As Crossfire pointed out, it may be a matter of determining the correct
server.

X11R6 should perhaps have simply been X11.

How does one determine the current server ?

I'm going to bed .....
