thanks to DaZZa and jamesw for responding.
i did muck around again with partition magic and recreated the partition.
DaZZa's suggestion to always have the linux partition at /dev/hda5 was a good
one and i've redone the partitions again to make this happen. i did replace
the partition and it worked again and then edited lilo and moved the
partition after that but it didn't work. so being a new HDD i blew the lot
and set it up again nicely.
by the way i've noticed that if your going to live with Linux and NT on the
same disk and be booting between them, then ***don't*** use NT's disk
administrator. it writes a signature file to the disk which it states that
won't harm anything.. BAH! i lost all partition info several times before i
figured out that the disk administrator was screwing it up.
anyway thanks all.
back to the scsi card problem...
