I'll add to those have had good experiences with Dell. I have a Inspiron
3500 that dual boots RH6.2/Win98. 99% of the time I am in Linux. Windoze
only gets a run for worl related reasons.

Have a look at
http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/system.asp?sid=INS_PNT_P03_7500.
You may notice Linux drivers are available.

And http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Laptop-HOWTO.html is your friend.

PS I am loathe to reccomend IBM Thinkpads due to too many bad support
experiences over the past year or so. I am not prepared to blame IBM
though. I lean towards a combination of PHBs and Windoze as the source
of the issues. Linux may be a different issue though.
