yep. Throwing crappy '90s technology at the problem isn't going to
fix it. The problem is not with the medium, its with the truckloads
of messages.

Perhaps (as you suggest) all we need is a culture where people say:

        "Here's my problem, tell me what to do and I'll summarise
        to the list"

... and then they actually go on and summarise the responses. The
only way to get that culture is for people to start doing it ...


What about the other type of big threads (long discussions about
random topics [such as this one :]). Would a separate discussion
list work?

These approaches involve pushing noise off the list, rather
than scooping signal from it. Which is more useful/viable?
