I doubt it's anything to do with 2.2.14.  I've upgraded from 2.0.36 ->
2.0.38 -> 2.2.5 -> 2.2.11 -> 2.2.13 -> 2.2.14 on my workstation and
nothing like this has happened along the way.

The colours are nothing to do with the kernel, they're generated by ls.

So you didn't just upgrade the kernel.

Do you get the right colours if you use `ls --color=auto'?  If so, then
you've probably lost the alias ls='ls --color=auto'.  Do you still see the
link details in ls's output:

[johnc@nospam.dropbear ~]$ ls -ld /usr/src/linux
total 1
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           12 Mar  2 15:54 linux -> linux-2.2.14
