[SLUG] Audio recording

Hi folks.

I'm having trouble getting decent quality audio recording happening on my
machine. I've had audio working under Windows in the past but now it
seems to have gone to crappy quality. The sound is absolutely appalling
for no particularly good reason.

It's an onboard OPL3-SA3 chip which I enable using this line in
/etc/modules
opl3sa2 io=0x370 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1

Everything is happily allocated in isapnp:
(IO 0 (BASE 0x0220))
(IO 1 (BASE 0x0530))
(IO 2 (BASE 0x0388))
(IO 3 (BASE 0x0330))
(IO 4 (BASE 0x0370))
(INT 0 (IRQ 5 (MODE +E)))
(DMA 0 (CHANNEL 0))
(DMA 1 (CHANNEL 1))

Playback works beautifully but recording is really really noisy. It's not
distortion and it's not the cable or anything like that as it gets through
perfectly on play-through. I've tried using both the line-in and
microphone inputs but it seems to be a software thing...

To demonstrate, have a listen to:

(recorded in xwave)

This seems quite similar to the problem someone had recording the SLUG
interview off the radio. What was the problem there?

simon@nospam.rumble.net A: One to do the reading, one to do the writing,

                               intellectuals.
