[SLUG] recognising a scsi card

hi slugs,
i'm trying to convert from a Windblows NT desktop to linux. have chosen
mandrake for this exercise.

i'm trying to get a scsi tape drive working with a ata1520 scsi card in
linux. it works fine in NT.
i've put in a line at the end of lilo.conf
append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1"
the scsi howto says to do this.

however upon bootup linux mandrake 7.0 reports 0 scsi hosts found.
there are no hard disks on this scsi bus, just a DAT tape drive.

any suggestions as to where to go or what to start with in detecting the
scsi card?
i'm reading the scsi howto but no luck so far.
any clues as to what to try/read next.
