[SLUG] KDE menu

Hi every one
The panel and menu can't find the programs.

I reinstalled KDE over the WE.  I've used kfm from the command line to
check out the kdelnk files and that works top start programs, but still the
menu and panel can't start them. 
The kmenuedit (from command line) locates the menu item and can edit them,
but still no joy from the panel.

Is there a global variable I need to set? 
How do I do this?
