We already do this for something like 20,000 students throughout the 
year.  The updates run incrementally, every night.

We have a dedicated student mail server.  It's constantly loaded.
We are investigating Web mail clients for the students  (IMP) but 
haven't made a lot of progress yet.

I'll be interested to see where this thread goes......
