Re: [SLUG] Opinions about the BEST supported video cards for X
hi,
i was faced with the same question some weeks ago. so my experience
could be useful for you - except i wanted good 3d as well.
i had a 3dfx voodoo banshee already. i was also fortunate enough
to have access to a few of my friends' cards. Matrox G400 dual head.
Voodoo 3, really cheap tnt, and a really good Creative GeForce DDR.
i was really keen on the G400 coz of dual head but we got dual monitors
working with the geforce and an S3 virge very easily. 2d image quality
seemed to be quite similar on all the cards. but in 3d,
the matrox and the voodoo3 performance was quite shameful compared to the
geforce. we just played Q3 though. (tnt & banshee results not worth
mentioning). also, note Unreal Tournament will not work with non-3dfx cards
cos its glide only.
i decided to get a geforce. you dont even need to buy the $600
creative or leadtek ones. the one i got was an el cheapo PowerColor 32Meg
DDR for $300.
piece of advice: don't go with the matrox just coz it has a dual head.
imo, it's not worth the money if you consider that you can get dual displays
working with other cards. Also, Quake3 is faster using the geforce, no
competition here. Nvidia's doing a really good job with the quality of their
drivers.
Hope that was useful.
oh... btw i use XF4.0 things may be a bit different using the 3.3.x drivers.
not sure, cant really comment on that.
