Serial connection (plus PS/2 for power). Unfortunately they aren't even
working properly on the Windows boxen that they were bought for (flakey
software) so not much to test with. 

I know so little about them that I don't even know exactly what I am
trying to implement. I believe they have some sort of IC on them with
some logic to protect the keys stored inside - that's why they cost
maybe $40 each.

Mm there's a combined smart card reader/fingerprint scanner which looks
rather neat.
