We have 126Mb of htDig generated indexes. We are quite happy with
htDig. I'm not sure how many Mb of pages that equates to but it is
certainly in the order of a few hundred.

htdig-3.0.8b2 takes about 2 hours to run each night. (It runs on the
same machine that is the web server, so network bandwidth isn't an
issue).
