Well Dean has pretty much given you a good outline of how journalling
works, all I can add is my own experience that; in my experience Reiser
FS works just as fast as Ext2, if not faster. Certainly if there's any
speed difference I haven't noticed it (except of course that Reiser FS
is *much* faster at booting after a crash). When you say it's slower 'by
quite a large amount' I think that something might be wrong with your
setup there, only because it doesn't match my experience at all.

Just a thought, but you said you noticed the difference in E rather than
on command line - I personally noticed a lag changing from XFree86-3.*
to XFree86-4, using E. Looks better, but seems to slow things down a bit
at the moment. Does SuSE 6.4 move from 3.* to 4, and if so, might your
problem be there rather than with Reiser FS?
