BookPool, http://www.bookpool.com, in the US has very good prices on the
O'Reilly books (the definitive texts on Perl, and other things...) I found
that even if I got the fastest version of DHL shipping, it was cheaper than
going to Dymocks!

Learning Perl and Programming Perl are very good. A couple of non-O'Reilly
books that are good are Elements of Programming with Perl and Object
Oriented Perl, both published by Manning.

To get you started, our training notes for Perl are available on our web
site at http://netizen.com.au/services/training/

Java can be very useful, but I find Perl much easier and faster for many
tasks. Additionally, I've had fewer problems with getting code developed on
Linux/FreeBSD/other UN*X to run on other UN*X boxen, as well as fewer subtle
problems swapping between them and Windows 98/NT/etc. (I said *subtle* :)

Good Luck!
