did a tcpdump.
the messages are from the linux computer trying to access the linux email
server. half a dozen imap2 messages going back and forth but no login
prompt on the client computer.

tried a new user but still no luck. imapd and pop3 running on the
server. sendmail obviously working as email from the server works ok back
and forth.

 ideas anyone?
