There are a couple of possibilities here.
1. Are you using twisted pair cable? If so did you remember to use a
crossover cable?
2. Did you check that you could ping your own machine's card?
3. Did you check if the Windows machine could ping its own card?
4. Did you check the setup from the windows machine's end?
5. Are your cards pci? If they are not, check that they are set for your
type of cable - many older cards don't auto detect the cable type and have
to be set up using special software.
I have the setup you mention running at present, at home (I play network
Quake with my daughter sometimes - her machine is a lot faster than mine so
I have to run the Linux version to keep up). When I set it up I had most of
my problems from the doze box.
