Terry's quite right here (not that I agree with everything he's said).
Teachers are underpaid when you consider how important their job is.
On the other hand teaching is the kind of job you should be doing
cos you love it not cos the pay is great (so if the pay was great
you'd get people going into teaching for the money which in my opinion
would be no good).
And certainly in IT, uni academics are underpaid compared to industry
but again it takes a certain type to be an academic - and most are
very happy with the life and would prefer academia than industry
regardless of salary.
It's also true that the govt education depts suck (but so does the
health dept, the IT dept (bloody Alston - the IT minister against
information and technology) etc etc).
It's also true that some parents do a crap job of teaching their
children and expect schools to do it all.

and very true.
