again i'm going to have to hop in here.  y2k isn't necessarily a good
example as in nearly all cases that i'm aware of programs/systems were
patched rather than rebuilt from scratch.  i'm not by any means saying that
everyone did this but it was certainly the most taken option.

i don't think anyone has yet specifically said or even hinted in the course
of this discussion that changing $language to $otherlanguage was because of
mistakes made.  mistakes could be considered as being rollout on platform
not suited to the task (high load on NT machines) or inappropriate language
(scientific apps written in hypercard) or poor design (failing to allow for
scalability).

hey, i'm all for tossing out the existing work and starting over when it's
appropriate.  i've done this a couple of times with projects i've had to do
for work/play, but it's something i try to avoid.
