I didn't see replies to this yet, so...
Run 'lpc', which is in /usr/sbin on my rh6 system. The 'status' command
will give you lotsa useful info. Queueing/printing may have been disabled
because of the error, so that even though the lp daemon's running no jobs
are being accepted/processed. lpc's enable/up commands will remedy this.
Failing this, I recommend investing in a large, inflatable hammer with a
builtin-in squeaker. With one of these you can beat the $#%^& out of your
hardware without actually damaging it. I got one at paddy's markets for
$2, and have got at least $50 worth of agro out of my system using it ;-P
