Hard drives are not the sole use for firewire - in fact, hard disks were
an add on at a later stage when someone went "Wow, you could put your hard
drives 2 kilometres away from your computer with this stuff!".
The original intent for firewire was for AV applications and the like. For
that purpose, Firewire is blindingly fast, and damn reliable. For hard
drive attachment, the standards are still evolving, and are subject to
"interpretation" - you know, like the "standards" Microsoft supports?
Given time to evolve properly, Firewire will become a boom, not a bust.
