I bit this two-pronged bullet (mixed metaphor?!) and
it was quite easy.

1. install Open SLL (took 10 mins max!)
2. install Open SSH

Open SSL is very useful for: ssh, scp, etc, also for cURL
(POST to https!), and for Apache with SSL.

10 mins. is a small price to pay for a licence-free,
free-beer, patent-free SSL solution, methinks.
