Well I've not been struck by this. /etc/network/interfaces is how (in future)
interfaces will be configured, in Debian, so humans and programs have an
easy time of it.

However you aren't required to modify /etc/init.d/network -- certainly none of my 8 machines have had to be touched.

If weren't able to get things working without modifying something then you should
definately file a bug on netbase.
