The ability to RTFM. Seriously. An IT person who throws their hands up
in the air and gives up just because they don't know something on the
spot is next to useless. Having the ability to research a problem, read
any manuals etc is vital and from this other skills will stem.

As for your class, I'd ask them the type of questions they should ask
themselves when they hit something they don't know and, in the
beginning, point them at the relevant manuals after getting them to
think about the problem a bit.
