I tracked down the cause of this a while ago, I've got the solution stored
in the sent mail folder of my email client at home, so forgive me if I'm
off by a tiny amount, but I seem to remember that the solution involved
going into putty's configuration and telling it to use SSH v2 and
keyboard-interactive authentication, since for some reason some people's
copies were defaulting to other methods which I gather aren't quite as
secure. I'll post again with more specific details, but I'm pretty sure
that was basically the solution.
