As far as I can remember they weren't normal CMOS chips...they didn't 
change state they added state so in theory you could record on them 
forever and never lose anything. Hence why they were used for starship 
logs...in theory the data on them couldn't be altered.

Yeah, something to do with quantum pairing.......as I recall it was 
first used by Anne McCaffery in the Crystal singer series.
