While I reserve judgement on the "tech only" issue for now, I think
this reaction is a little extreme. I am sorry that a ProgSoc member's
post offended you, but the best way to deal with a misconception about
a subject you are familiar with is to calmly correct the misconception,
which you managed to do just fine in your first paragraph.
I, too, am unfamiliar with India's caste system, but from my reading of
the above statement the discussion was of a social system. The comment
was neither racist nor condescending, and (to my, again relatively
ill-informed ear) was no more or less offensive than any of Alister's
rants on issues with Western society. In other words, the regular
attacks on the evolution of the "socio-economic class system in
England" which you mentioned above. Please correct me if there is more
involved.
On another note, I'm enjoying the list's deviation from its regular
"question and answer" technical mode, but I understand that others may
not appreciate it. Does anyone else have comments on this?
