It doesn't actually work now that there is number portability.
It used to be that
04*1, 04*2, 04*3 were optus,
04*4, 04*5, 04*6 were vodaphone,
04*7, 04*8, 04*9 were telstra,
not sure about 04*0.

I'm not sure how things like Orange and Virgin Mobile fit in either.
