RE: [ProgSoc] Basic video conferencing

See:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B158623

for the details, but basically the box needs to be sitting smack bang on
the internet. MSN replaces netmeeting, and older versions are not
compatible with the MSN version, I found myself having to install MSN
for this reason (for voice chat, video worked too).

I'm not certain, but I think that netmeeting used to require some sort
of server, frankly I never quite understood it, although I did get it
working some time (pre-2000) and joined some public chat room - every
second chat I joined started with someone pulling his p3n|5 on camera..
:/

In order to get MSN to work on my network, I have configured NAT on my
ADSL modem to forward all ports not specifically forwarded elsewhere to
one static IP that is outside my DHCP range, I manually change the IP
address of a computer that I need to use MSN on to this address when I
need to use it, at other times there is no such IP on my network.. not
perfect but good enough for my small network.

John.

In my experience, *I think* Netmeeting works well if both ends have
internet-routable IP's. If one end is being NATted before reaching the
internet, only one end will be able to see the other (and I can't
remember
which).

I say "I think" because there was also a firewall there at the time, but
I'm semi-certain that I turned the firewall off or unblocked whichever
ports I knew Netmeeting used so I think it got to the stage where we
worked out that it had to be the NAT. But I'm not 100% sure, so someone
else may have additional wisdom or experience and be able to correct me
on it.

Regards,
Andrew.
