Even if you've got whatever the EIDE equivalent of the SCA (?)
plugs are - the integrated power / data cables - you still need to
have a controller than can cope with drives appearing and then
disappearing. Your average non-RAID run-of-the-mill mobo
based IDE controller .. will likely barf in a big way.
Dunno if anything would blow up .. but try inserting and removing
the drive a few dozen times really quickly just to stress-test the
process. :)
