There was one discussed a little while ago on slashdot called directFB 
<http://www.directfb.org> - looks kinda nice, might try it on soon - 
they are also developing an X server that runs on top of it so's u can 
still run all ur legacy apps (gtk is supported or well on the way to being)

u could also try one of the commercial X servers if u got money; they 
may well be faster. Also ur window manager/desktop environment may be 
slowing it down a lot.
