[ProgSoc] Windows File Sharing in 98/2000
I am having the following problem with file sharing:
I have a Win2000 box and a Win98 box. Both are members of the same
workgroup (not in a domain). The Win2000 machine is configured to always
logon as the same user - let's call him 'Bob' to protect his identity...
The password for Bob is blank.
On the Win2000 box, I have shared out the C: drive with the name 'C',
and read-only permissions for the user 'Everyone'.
On the Win98 box, using explorer, I can see the Win2000 box and the
share 'C'. When I attempt to connect to the share by double-clicking
'C', it says 'wrong username/password' or something similar. This dialog
box includes a field to enter a password. It does NOT include a field
for a username. Regardless of the password I try, including blank, it
won't connect.
When I try to connect from a different machine running Win2000, it gives
the same error. However, this box allows me to specify a username and
password. If I enter Bob and blank password, it works! If I enter any
other login details, including a valid domain user, it doesn't work.
I don't know what to do because:
1 - The Win98 error does not allow me to specify a username.
2 - The share setup (on the Win2000 box) does not mention anything about
requiring a password. I would have thought that giving access to
'Everyone' would allow anyone in.
Cheers,
Jay.
