Digital Backup (was: [ProgSoc] Copyright)

On a similar note, what is law regarding back up of information on a digital media (game, music CD etc)
I was making a backup of the Sims CD that I bought (no lie :) I truly bought a copy). The annoying thing is that I can install from the copied CD but not play it! What right does a company from preventing me making a backup???

For those who care/interested, Sims is a good game but B&W is even better :)

Is there one vast depository of all the liscensing and copyright schemes?

I live with people who claim that because you can copy 15% of a book, you can do the same with a CD, i.e. one song.

Surely if this were the case, then napster wouldn't be an issue hardly @nospam. all.

I'm hunting for the B/W law thingy.

Oh, and I met with a Youth group last friday, and got 4 converts to Linux. Mind you, Mandrake is not wanting to install on two of those machines. Anyone know where I can get Mandrake 8.0, (bearing in mind how slow Ballarat internet connections are) without having to pay more than $15?

thanx
