From the buyers point of view, the AMD chips are faster and cheaper
than the inteL chips (depends on exactly what software you run
but they are mostly faster).

From the makers point of view, the Athalon designers put more
effort into adding more execution units and better cache support
and less into special 3D instructions and RAMBUS. Also, their
markup is smaller because they don't spend on big advertising
campaigns.

By the way, both the 1G Athalon and 1G Pentium chips run really
hot... I'd say anything 600MHz or so is fast enough for anything
you could want and still slow enough to be reliable.
