Nothing's written to the CD unless your CD drive is capable of writing.  
Most aren't - so that's out.
 
The only way the program will know whether it's been installed somewhere
else is over the network.  Did you register Office 2K online?  Because if
you did, then the networks are no longer completely different - both
installs would be talking to Microsoft's registration server.

I'd check that first.  I tend to avoid registering products (online or
otherwise) in any case, because there doesn't seem to be any benefit in
doing so.
