Adam,
when this happens the drive is usually stuffed,.............But I have
had this happen a number of times before when person whom I won't
mention dropped the hard drive or computer when moving it what is
happenning is the head has ceased. to fix it drop it again, not to hard
though.

BTW I only suggest you do this if you are desperate, it only seems to
work on better quality drives (personal experience with Quantum and
Seagate)
