[ProgSoc] hdd's

Just a question to satisfy my curiousity; I don't think it will help to
recover the hard disk...
Anyone know waht has happened to a hd when it just sits there going
'click...click...click...click'. I have now come across three drives doing
this, latest was the office pc at work (no backups :( ).
I opened one up once, and the head arms (these newfangled ones where the
heads move in an arc, on a pivoted arm, not the ancient stepper
motor/threaded shaft) are flicking from the outer edge to the inner limits
of the disk. Tonight at work I tried swapping the controller with the pcb
from an identical drive, and the same thing was happening, so it is
obviously a preoblem with the drive itself, not the electronics. As I
said, I'm just curious, so does anybody have any ideas?
