Hmm.. When I saw that it detected the Matrox and then said installing
the SVGA Server, I was quite suprised, but I made the assumption that
they must have extended the SVGA server to encompass more cards

That's fine, just sounding out the more experienced linux users out
there, it's been about 6 months since I last played with it. I was
actually pretty impressed with Gnome, and GIMP has moved forward
*alot* since I last used it.

Tried all different kinds, different depths and switching between
them. When Xconfigurator tries to probe the hardware it comes back
with errors, which was suprising, because it never had a problem
before. I know that probing is not always sucessful, I will play more
with it tonight.
I also noticed that it had difficulty finding a PCI NE200 network
card. But this is the first time that I have run Linux with a PCI
network card so I have to play more with it.
