Later versions of XFree have Matrox acceleration built into the SVGA
server - though I'm not sure if that version is included on RH6. I've
got a Millenium I card and it works fine with SVGA, admittedly on a
reasonably hacked-around RH5.2 box.

My previous card was an S3 Trio64 and also worked well. Remember that
Xfree has nothing to do with Linux except that it happens to run on it,
unless you're using fbcon, but you're not. X runs slower than Windows,
but that's not due to the video card - it's because X is big and fat.
Sorry this response wasn't more helpful - but at least you know that
the problem shouldn't be with either the card or X. :)
ObStupidQuestion: Have you ensured that your default display mode is set
to the correct res?

What I really hate is the way [religious people] influence the media. [...]
How often have you seen something like this on the news?
Reporter: "You've just lost your house and everything you own. How do
you feel."
Victim: "I just thank the LORD everyone made it out okay, especially my
little foofoo."
Meanwhile, in the background you see the firefighter who actually saved
little foofoo being treated for his injuries, with LORD nowhere to be
seen...
