[ProgSoc] RH6.0 & XServers

Hi kids!
finally got all my stuff into gear and freed up some disk to put
RedHat 6.0 on lastnight. I didn't get alot of time to play around but
I have a question. Even though the installer detected my Matrox
Millenium PCI card, I still wasn't able to get the resolution above
640x480 and 8bit depth, despite playing around with clocks and
Xconfigurator etc.
I have run different distributions of linux off and on over the last 5
years on the same machine and I have always been able to get at least
800x600 16Bit. The last couple of times I have used MetroX. My
question is this.. The installer installed the SVGA Xserver by
default, is there any other servers out there more suited to the
Matrox chipsets (other than MetroX), otherwise is there some reason
why I wouldn't want to go with MetroX?
Finally, is there some commonly agreed upon graphics card(s) that
particularly suit linux? I have had some experience with S3's and
can't say that I was especially impressed.
Thanks
