The account Lars Wirzenius gives is that when Linus first uploaded his
source code to incoming on ftp.funet.fi, he gave the sources a
non-descript name.  When the ftpmaster saw it he contacted Linus and
insisted that he choose a real name for the kernel.  Linus was still
unable (or unwilling) to come up with a name, so the ftpmaster renamed
the sources to "Linux".  Once people started downloading it by that name,
there was a stronger pressure to keep the name... and the rest, as they
say, is history.
