If you're going to use Avid software, it really should be with Avid
hardware. Avid produce a range of packages (Mac based) which appear to be
the de facto industry standard for video editing.
By second semester the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will have
five Avid eXpresses available for students taking video editing subjects
(primarily film and video students).
There's also the Media 100, which is more widely used amongst journalists.
It's not as good as the Avids, but is cheaper. An NT version is
available.
It all depends how seriously you take your editing. If you don't give a
shit, and are just stuffing around, it doesn't really matter what you get.
If you're a serious editor, be prepared to spend a fair bit of money (but
if you were serious about it, you'd probably be aware of the
software/hardware packages that exist already).
