ok here's my free and therefore no-responsibility-taken advice.
(one of many from others, i'm sure)

put TCP/IP onto the PCs - it's free from microsoft for win 3.1,
and included in windows 95.
get a 486dx2/66 (or better) PC with (say) 16MB RAM, about (say)
1GB or so of disk space, and a cheap 14" monitor.
install linux on said PC.
install sendmail v8 and an IMAP 4 server (say from washington.edu)
on said linux system.
use netscape navigator to read EMAIL.
done.
