[ProgSoc] e-mail on LAN

Hello people!
I know a guy that has been given the job of making an "e-mail" system
for *some computers on a PC LAN at his office...and I am wondering (just
like him)
what would be the best option?
It would only need to work between about 10-20 computers on the LAN made
up of about 60 or so computers. There seems to be no need for outside
connection (unless
they get a perm net connection one day!, although you can never tell what
might
happen in the future).

I guess you might need to set up a single computer as a separate e-mail
"server" and so I probably need to know what would a good system
in terms of hardware (as well as software) requirements.

Some of the more discerning readers of this message may have picked up
on that fact that I know next to nothing about this topic! - therefore
links to books, web pages, or any info that could help us would be
greatly appreciated! :)

P.S. Please bear in mind - this is a budget conscious effort (otherwise
it they would have hired professionals to come in and set up the e-mail
system :)

Some network details:

* Computer types/models: ~60 IBM compatible PC’s ranging from 486’s to mid
range Pentiums running win95/win3.x
(NOTE: only about 10 or so computers out of the 60 are to use the e-mail
system!)

* Network type: Novell NetWare

Thanks in advance!
Daniel.
