[ProgSoc] Re: [PROGSOC-ANNOUNCE] Progsoc Meeting 12/6/98

Anton,

The A-G just released a press-release on copyright on the internet. As
part of the proposed reforms (due to hit the parliament in August) there
will be a limit on the liability of ISPs.

In situations where someone provides material that infringes copyright
through an ISP, and the ISP simply provides the physical means of
publication, they will not be liable. This will potentioally cover the
situation that has caused Progsoc concern in the past.

However the press release talks about ISPs and Carriers. Presumably they
mean carrier under the Telecommunications Act. Progosc is neither. It
may be worth us (progsoc) sending a letter to the A-G requesting that
organisations such as Progsoc be included in the proposed amendment.

In looking at this, it might be worth my getting in touch with some of
the programmers' societies at other Unis - what do you think? Do you
have contact emails?

Regards,
Chris
