I know that sound drivers was one of the big things that got changed
between 2.0.x and 2.1.x kernels. Still, it should work on 2.0.30
and onwards for a basic SB16. I got it working once, thought it was cute
and switched it off again so I can't tell you much more.

XFree86 has a special ViRGE server that is available in binary on most
of the Linux distributions. I think that the source for all the possible
servers is together in a heap and you choose the card at compile time,
all S3 cards are supported to the best of my knowledge.

1024 * 768 * 2 = 1572864 so it should fit onto a 2M card,
mind you 2M cards must be getting rare these days...
