[ProgSoc] Linux Sound

I have a big-ish problem with trying to get sound going on my Linux box.
Problem #1: Sound drivers do not compile.
When I try to "make modules" (or even make zImage if I have put sound into
the kernel proper) it bombs out on the file sb_common.c. The error message
is sopmethign like "compile with CONFIG_AUDIO". Wandering through the
source, I discovered it was looking for CONFIG_AUDIO to be defined (as a
macro) somewhere, but I couldn't find it defined anywhere. None of the
FAQ's, HOWTO's, manuals or readme's have anything about problems compiling
(as far as I could see). Has anyone had similar problems? Is it possible
my distribution sux? What am I doing trying to configure sound on my
comupter just a couple of days before exams? (btw I am running debian
1.3.X , kernel 2.X, and have an SB16 card).

Also, does anyone know if a s3 Virge with 2mb vidram supports 16 bit
colour at 1024x768? Are they easy to set up with Linux (running XFree86 or
MetroX)? I am contemplating upgrading my video card on the cheap, but need
a bit of advice.

Cheers,
