Erm, actually the only pre-emptive multitasking going on is ironically in
the 68k Macs, when they use the Code Fragment Manager for forward
compatibility features on a PowerMac.  These same CFM functions are
co-operative on the PowerMacs.  68k compatibility will finally be thrown
out with the rest of the "bad news" APIs in a new API set.

Those new IBMs ... Pentiums I think they're called? ... they're just
finishing going to 32-bit software aren't they?

MS even put a "View Word 5.1 menus" option in to placate everybody in 98. 
Their IE4 for Mac is smaller and snappier than Netscape, but I don't know
how ambivolent everyone is about Communicator's quality these days.
