[ProgSoc] PPP under linux

I know this sounds like a RTFM question, but I want to know how to get my
linux box to talk tot my modem. All the PPP scripts and the like that I
have seen expect the modem to be attached to /dev/cua0, etc, however my
linux box does not have this device. The serial ports seem to be connected
to /dev/ttyS0-1, yet when I substitute /dev/ttyS0 for /dev/cua0 in the
scripts in TFM nothing happens! Do I need to load a module or something?
