split , as the name would suggest, splits a file. What works for me is a
zmodem transfer over hyperterminal from a terminal session (this has
autorecovery). CuteFTP for windows also has a resume feature so u can
reume where u left off. I think there's some new ftp thingie mentionsed in
tfm. but I can't be bothered looking. (I has a similar crash
recovery/resume feature) (sorry about the typo's my connection is really
slow and I can't be bothered waiting for the text to appear)

I can only assume that you need to redirect /dev/mouse to whereever your
mouse is (see the how-tos - I'm sure theres stuff there)
